C section or Natural Labour?

Why are more and more women opting for C-sections?

C section is only recommended when some form of danger is associated to the mother or the baby with the fetus being at risk. However, recent trends have shown that this has become a method of avoiding delivery pain rather than a medical procedure which is required for case-by-case history. Increasingly, people have started to believe that cesarean delivery is better because it evades pain and for obvious reasons this seems to be the top-most priority for a pregnant lady. Some people also believe that cesarean delivery is safer and healthier for the long term, however, this is not backed up by knowledge when pertaining to normal and uncomplicated deliveries that could have very well been done in natural labor.

Why do some gynecologists recommend C-sections even when it’s not indicated?

Natural birth brings forth faster recovery, more safety for the mother and the baby, avoids the use of anesthesia and reduces the overall hospital stay.  There is a widespread fear of natural birth in terms of the pain threshold that woman increasingly do not want to undergo or suffer. It comes without saying that a lot of women are misinformed about the benefits of natural labor and in some cases this might benefit the gynecologist more than it benefits the doctor.

What are the benefits of vaginal birth?

    • Faster recovery, no anesthesia and smaller hospital stay
    • Reduced risk of the need for a blood transfusion
    • Reduced risk of a postpartum infection, including a uterine infection.
    • Reduced risk of internal uterine scarring and bladder and bowel injury.

    When are C-sections actually necessary?

C-sections are indicated when women are going through a high-risk pregnancy, have developed a complication or a medical condition during pregnancy, have placenta problems or has a child in breech position. All these conditions make C-section very important for the safety of mother and her baby.
