"A sleeping baby is a reminder that there's magic in the world, and that sometimes the greatest miracles come in the smallest packages."

How much sleep do babies need?

Sleep is a period that is characterized by marked change in brain activity. It is a resting period in which a baby experiences reduced sensory activity and decreased responsiveness to any external stimuli. Consequently, good sleep patterns have been linked to cognitive and developmental advantages. Many studies have found relationships between sleep duration and cognitive benefits in school-aged children. Infant sleep also plays an important role in memory consolidation, a process through weak memories are grounded firmly and are less capable of being forgotten.

Sleep is an important part of an infant’s development and sleep organization patterns happen during the first 6 months of a baby’s life. Some research also suggests that shorter sleep duration in early childhood has a potential risk for overweight and obesity in life. (Tham EK, 2017)
