What is diaper rash?
Diaper is a common condition in diaper-wearing kids and it presents with a sore, red, scaly and tender area around the area where the diaper touches a baby’s skin. It can be explained as irritated skin (dermatitis) which looks like inflamed patches of baby skin. In cases where the rash has become worse, cracked, bleeding or infected skin may be seen. More than half of babies’ from 4 to 15 months of age will develop diaper rash atleast once in a two-month span.
Causes of diaper rash:
There are many causes of diaper rash some of which include; irritation, infection, allergies, moisture, friction or partially removed chemicals left off from urine or faeces.
Symptoms of Diaper rash include:
- Slightly reddened skin
- An area that maybe warm to touch
- Cracked, chaffed or inflamed skin
What is diaper rash associated with most of the time?
- Switch to better diapers; a disposable diaper, breathable disposal diaper and selectively permeable diapers.
- Topical agents; barrier creams such as zinc oxide paste or petroleum jelly, is recommended to minimize contact with urine and fecal contact with skin. Other useful creams include vitamin A and D ointment and Burrow solution.
- Change diapers often, rinse your baby’s bottom with warm water as part of each diaper change and gently pat the skin dry with a clean towel or let it air dry.
- Apply cream paste or ointment regularly, after changing diapers, wash your hands well. Give your baby more time without a diaper on.
